March 15th Folk holiday Fedot Vetronos Signs, traditions, sayings The folk holiday "Fedot Vetronos" is celebrated on March 15 (according to the old style - March 2). AT Orthodox calendar this is the day of commemoration of the holy martyr Theodotos of Cyrene, bishop. Other names of the holiday: "Fedot - snow drift", "Spring Fedot", "Whirlwinds". The Russian people nicknamed the saint Vetronos, because strong winds were not uncommon on his holiday. The homeland of Saint Theodotus is the city of Galatia in Asia Minor, but his whole life was spent in Cyprus in Kyrenia. When Theodotus first arrived in Cyprus, by the power of his preaching he managed to convert many pagans to the Christian faith. For this, the clergy of Cyprus awarded him the highest priestly rank. At the beginning of the 4th century, the persecution of Christians began and Theodotos was arrested. He was tortured, but he did not renounce the true faith. Soon, Tsar Constantine the Great freed the imprisoned Christians. Martyr Theodotos returned to the duties of Bishop of Kyrenia and died peacefully two years later. Since Fedot's day usually fell on Great Lent, it was recommended not to violate it and follow the monastic charter. On March 15, we tried to adhere to a dry diet, that is, to eat vegetables without any heat treatment. It was necessary to take food only 1 time per day after sunset. In addition, they tried to refrain from entertainment, bad thoughts and foul language. There was once a belief that all the underground springs boil on Fedot, pouring out on the ground with the last thaw. And if, instead of the expected thaw, there was frost, they sighed, waving their hands in dismay: “Fedot, but not that one.” But even greater grief brought strong winds and snow drifts. After all, if "Fedot is evil - do not be with the grass." And she, fresh, green, appetizing, was so needed at that time. On hay and straw, what a cow's milk yield, and they had to be saved in mid-March. What if winter clears up, snowstorms break out, deciding to play tricks on the ground for another week or two. Is it worth waiting for good things from them, when even Fedot, instead of the long-awaited warmth, sprinkles with snow. And if "A skid on Fedot - the cattle will go for demolition." However, heavy snowfall, and even with a cold gusty wind, caused significant damage not only to the barnyard, but to the entire peasant economy in general. Therefore, people hurried from the barn to the yard, from the yard to the garden, to shake off the snow that had stuck to the heavy trees, remove branches broken by the wind, heal wounds ... In general, there was a lot of work in the March garden. Sayings and signs: - Fedot Vetronos - sticks his nose everywhere. - Fedot is angry, but by noon he becomes limp, you see, and his sun is hot. - Evdokia Fedot did not ask, she equipped the spring, but he either rips off the roof, or breaks the woodpile, the peasants care. - What is the weather on March 15, so will July be. - If it snows all day, it means that the heat will not come soon. - Long icicles mean a long spring. - Frosty day - there will be problems with stocks of fodder for livestock and haymaking. - If you plant onions and celery on this day, they will give a good harvest. - If Avdotya and Fedot were clear, then Yegory (May 6) and Nikola (May 22) will also be clear. "They love an apple tree for apples, and a bee for honey." But back in August, the gray-bearded beekeepers sorted out the honey, filling birch bark tubs and pot-bellied tubs with “amber molasses” after the main honey collection. Now it's time to think about the bees, because according to popular belief, it is Savvatey who closes the honey season, completing the last bee nine of this year.

All summer the bees were bustling - God's servants, extracting wax for candles and filling the fragile windows of honeycombs with fragrant nectar, so that people could, after lighting the wicks and torches, indulge in the warmth and comfort of honey, which is so good and sweet that with it "and a chisel swallow, and eat a lump, and then sit and ask for more.

But October is a muddy earth not only with a leaf, but also with a snowball. A man, “having changed his caftan for a sheepskin coat”, at this time “says goodbye to the sun, gets closer to the stove”, and what about the bees, on which, apart from a striped sweatshirt, there is nothing. It's time for them to rest, in warm cellars and omshaniki, to while away the fierce winter in warmth, remembering how small children fervently prayed for them on Savvatei - the bee intercessor. After all, the honey trade is considered by the people to be one of those that are of moral purity and righteous life demands, and which of the adult people can boast of his sinlessness. So it’s better for the kids to pray for the prosperity and well-being of the honey miners, and the adults to take care of earthly affairs, cleaning, correcting, insulating and removing the hive for the winter.

Folk signs and customs on October 10

AUTUMN CARE OF A BEEKEEPER

A good beekeeper begins preparing for winter not a day or two before placing the hives in storage, but much earlier - immediately after the main honey collection. At this time, store extensions and honey cases are removed from the hives, the bee colonies are carefully examined and measures are taken to build up young bees for the winter. The strength of bee colonies is determined by the number of frames (streets) densely planted by bees. If the family does not completely occupy two buildings, the nest is concentrated in one. The presence of a queen in a family is determined by sowing the combs with eggs, and its quality is judged by the brood. A good queen in a strong colony lays eggs over the entire area of the comb, and there are almost no empty cells in it. Bad queens are not left in the winter, replacing them with full-fledged ones or combining them with other bee families that have highly productive queens. If in the apiary the bee colonies differ in the number of worker bees and brood, they should be equalized by moving one or two frames with printed brood from the most strong families into the weak.

If the family does not have enough combs suitable for laying eggs, frames with a large number of free cells are placed in the middle of the nest, while frames with black and damaged combs are removed from the hives. If such frames are occupied by brooding, they are first placed on the edge of the nest and removed, waiting for the young bees to emerge from them. Small areas of honey found in combs unsuitable for wintering are sealed and placed behind the diaphragm or placed on the edge of the nest so that the bees can take honey from them.

In addition to the necessary reserves of fodder honey, one full comb of perga is left in each nest for the winter. Excess combs with bee bread, except for those left in the nests for the winter, are removed from the hives and stored until spring. This food is of undoubted value for the spring development of bee colonies, especially in places where early entry of pollen into the nests is not expected.

The bees are removed to the winter quarters after their last autumn flyby, when the air temperature is stable at 12-15°C. Such overflights are called cleansing and are considered extremely useful, because they enable the bees to clear their intestines of accumulated feces before a long winter stay in the hives. Therefore, beekeepers should in every possible way encourage the late autumn flyby, opening the entrances to the full light, removing the covers from the hives so that the sun, warming up the nests of bee colonies from above, encourages them to fly out of the hives.

When the temperature drops to 7-8 ° C, bee colonies begin to crowd into a spherical mass - a club, which, as it gets colder, shrinks more and more densely and moves upward from the entrance. At this time, the lower entrances should be reduced to 3-5 cm, the upper ones should be closed by placing insulating pillows on the nests, and the hives should be checked again and, if necessary, transferred to the winter quarters.

WINTER HOUSES

Depending on climatic conditions and the level of groundwater occurrence, wintering houses are divided into underground, semi-underground and aboveground.

On personal plots, as a rule, preference is given to underground winter huts. At the same time, it is desirable that the selected site be well protected from cold winds and located in a dry place. The end part of the winter hut must be on the leeward side.

Bricks can be used to build walls, but if the ground is hard enough, boards or even slabs are usually dispensed with. The floors of the winter hut are not sheathed with boards, since under the weight of a person they can bend, shaking the hive and disturbing the bees.

The ceiling of the winter hut is covered with boards or logs, carefully covering the cracks. On top of the clay - earthen cushion, in order to protect the winter hut from moisture penetration, any moisture-repellent material is laid: roofing felt, roofing felt, slate, etc.

The ventilation of the winter hut is carried out by supply and exhaust pipes, equipped with protective caps and gratings that protect the room from the penetration of water and mice into it.

Inside the winter hut, racks 70-90 cm wide are arranged along the walls, retreating from the floor by 10-30 cm. Hives are placed in a row on the racks, for ventilation, the entrances are completely opened on them, which were tightly closed before installing the hives in the winter huts. If the temperature in the winter house does not fall below 2°C and there are no mice there, even the covers are removed from the hives, storing them separately.

Bees can't stand dampness. Therefore, throughout the winter, you should monitor the level of humidity, if necessary, ventilate the room and even bend back the insulation canvas on the roof of the hive by 2-3 cm, exposing all the frames. As for the air temperature, 0 ° C is quite suitable for wintering bees.
