Hipster - who is he?

Fashion & Style

Hello, dear readers of the blog site. Today we have another fashionable word on our turn, which, although it does not relate to youth slang (like, for example, or), but is directly related to youth, because hipster is usually a young man or girl between the ages of 14 and 30 (although there are also eternal teenagers).

Besides age, hipster different from the surrounding crowd(namely, this is his main task) a rather pretentious appearance (ala a hipster or a beatnik) and the accessories used (vintage things, hats, beards, thick-framed glasses, Apple gadgets) and area of interest (narrow areas of art little known and interesting ).

In fact, This is one of the areas of the subculture(groups of people who are united by lifestyle, behavior and interests) which has now gained high popularity. Remember before there were punks, goths, emo, etc. Well, now the hipsters are “on horseback”. They are imitated, their clothing style is copied, they are admired, they are scolded and even hated. So who are hipsters? Let's figure it out.

That's a hipster

How to recognize a hipster or how to become one? In principle, it is not difficult to recognize, although you can decide that he is a beatnik, a dude or a hippie (or a moderate emo or an unfinished goth). The differences between them are not significant in the eyes of the average person. If you want to become a hipster, you will have to recognize the differences. The followers of this movement do not have any special ideas (the hippies at least had the slogan “for peace”). There is only a desire to stand out from the crowd, which is what they do.

Typically, hipsters dress rather extravagantly and pretentiously, in the eyes of a person with established views and tastes (in other words, an adult). Some of their frequent tricks went to the people. For example, skinny jeans with the hem rolled up so that your ankles are visible (look around, and every second teenager will be wearing these). As well as short socks or even shoes worn on bare feet.

The word hipster comes from the English slang expression “to be hip” (for us it would sound like “to be in the know,” i.e. follow the current fashion and style). Therefore, it is not surprising that their style reflects current fashion. But this will not be enough to stand out.

Therefore, they add to their image some more that are inherent mainly only to them. attributes:

If you couldn’t identify a hipster by his clothes, you can try this according to his area of interest(remember, probably, that a subculture implies a community of interests):

  1. You definitely need to be interested in something cutting-edge from painting, literature, music and cinema. Something that the average person doesn’t care about or is simply not interested in (art house, little-known alternative bands, writers, artists, etc.). Interests, as well as clothing, should distinguish this group of people from the general gray crowd.
  2. Traveling (even within the confines of your place of residence) with the search for cafes and other rare places that have not yet been inhabited by anyone. The ultimate dream, of course, is London. Essentially, this is a hipster city(s) with its vintage taxis, policemen and guardsmen in meter-long hats. Although personally, after a couple of weeks there, it began to seem to me that I was on the territory of a huge factory due to the widespread finishing of the facades with brick - apparently, they saved a lot on plaster. But it’s understandable, because I’m not “to be hip” (not in the subject).
  3. Leading a healthy lifestyle is very popular among them (among hipsters there are many vegans and simply obsessed with environmental friendliness). Many people prefer small shops (secret) to large grocery stores.
  4. They prefer live beer, and even better, craft beer, i.e. not brewed on an industrial scale (like music and everything else). At one time, representatives of this subculture made sales for the little-known American brand Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR). They even raised the price of their beer to the level of higher quality products. It's unlikely that hipsters were attracted by the taste of this beer - rather, it was because others paid little attention to it.
  5. Social media accounts with photos of themselves, as well as food, clothes and places they have visited. This passion for photography borders more on diagnosis than on art (creativity), but this is not unique to them (a selfie, after all, speaks of loneliness in a crowd, and not of coolness).

And, of course, attitude towards yourself and others. This will complete the hipster look.

To stand out from the crowd, you need to rise above it (or at least begin to believe it). If in reality you can’t rise up, then you can humiliate those around you (at least in your own eyes). To do this, it is enough to start considering yourself chosen (exceptional, who understood the essence of things). This is why many people dislike them. And so, in general, harmless (albeit stupid) guys.

Who are hipsters really?

In my opinion, hipsters are those who "mow" under the so-called creative class"(more or less talented people, usually related to the field of art). As you know, talent is talented in everything, including clothing and the ability to present oneself. Many people want to be as outstanding (to rise above the crowd), but not many are given this from above.

Therefore, there is only one thing left to do - copy the appearance of the Creacles (clothing, style, attributes) and carefully hide your mediocre content behind a look of superiority and a condescending smile.

In principle, even without being a genius and without possessing the skill of a stylist, you can choose a “hipster suit” (in fact, this is a rather narrow set of things, accessories and features), put on a good-naturedly ironic look and start to consider yourself different from everyone else(with a plus sign, of course). Demonstrate an interest in art, and in such movements that the majority does not accept or does not notice at all.

At the same time, it is necessary to insert into the conversation phrases from songs or quotes from books that few people have heard or read. Post photos of secret places inaccessible to mere mortals on social networks, etc. It seems like you are positioning yourself as smart (with little blood), belonging to the caste of the elite, thereby rising above the crowd of plebeians. In general, you don’t have to be a psychologist to understand the nature of this particular subculture.

Essentially, hipsterism is the desire to appear (but not be) head and shoulders above everyone else, while in fact being equal or even shorter than those around you. Recognize yourself as creative, but don’t be one (don’t even try). The main thing here is the emulation of a rich inner world, in the absence of one.

On the other hand, hipsters can also be understood. As one popular toast says, the main thing is so that our desires coincide with our capabilities. But not everyone does this. Often ambitions dictate a person’s line of behavior in which he is forced to commit deception (and often self-deception, denial of reality) in order to begin to feel satisfied with life.

Real talent (and creativity is directly related to this concept) is rare. And there are even a few simply gifted people. But there are a lot of average ones (neither fish nor meat). This is the law of evolution, which is subject to the principles of distribution of quantities. Many are identical and slightly different (both with a plus sign and with a minus sign).

But this doesn't always happen. Adolescents and young adults experience particular pain from such injustice. It’s so arranged that at this age they have to decide on the niche in life that they will occupy, and often their existing abilities are not enough to satisfy their exorbitant ambitions (at this age they are especially out of touch with reality).

As a result, youth subcultures arise that help them temporarily level out the discrepancy between their desires and capabilities. Hipsters became one of these subcultures, which began to gain particular popularity precisely from the beginning of the 2000s (we can say that hipsters had a second youth, which began half a century after the birth of this movement).

There is a common expression - happy is not the one who has a lot, but the one who has enough. And this is true not only for material goods. The same can be said about those components that allow a person to stand out from the crowd.

It turns out that hipsters and representatives of other subcultures are people who are initially dissatisfied with the current state of affairs, who, through denial of reality, try to place themselves in a comfort zone (a kind of auto-training - “I am the most olfactory and attractive” with my simple tricks).

Probably, we should feel sorry for the hipsters, because it’s not very comfortable for them to live without their disguise. It’s like Mr. X – “always wearing a mask is my destiny”...

In addition, now some attributes inherent in hipsters can be found on almost every second teenager or young man. is that, wanting to stand out, hipsters came up with something like workwear and special accessories, which no longer make them unique.

Nowadays, the hipster style is in fashion, and therefore the appearance of the most artsy representative of this subculture will surprise few people (they may not even notice it - the eye is so blurry). How to distinguish someone who imitates crackles (extraordinary people) from those who imitate hipsters themselves. The common man can no longer do this.

All that remains is to maintain a mask of superiority at all costs (put a good face on a bad game). Until they grow up.
